DURBAN – The South African Football Association was knocked out of the African Nations Cup soccer tournament on Saturday night after losing to Mali in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. The 40 member SAFA NEC failed to beat the small war-torn West African nation on home soil despite having access to the best business class flights, 5-star hotels, restaurants and VIP treatment available. Football fans meanwhile were left despondent, as the organisation, which is responsible for the development of South African football at all levels and is the de facto custodian of the senior national side, again failed to perform on the international stage. The SAFA team has had a patchy run of form since its establishment in 1991 despite boasting an abundance of executives, officials and ad hoc committees.
