Shaik Cards Sparkling 72 At Durban Country Club

DURBAN – Local businessman Schabir Shaik mastered windy conditions and crippling terminal illness to grind out an impressive even par 72 at the Durban Country Club yesterday. Tough pin placements – as well as the threat of imminent expiry – initially threatened to derail Shaik’s round, but he scrambled well to stay in the hunt with a par at 2 and a solid birdie at 4. Trouble followed with a duffed tee shot into the thick stuff at 5, but the Berea boy staged a miraculous recovery to survive. Shaik again pulled a rabbit out the hat at 6, managing to sign for par after looking dead and buried off the tee. A birdie at 8 and a chip in at 9 saw him set a blistering pace, confounding pundits as well as the very tenets of modern medical science. Durban Country Club’s notorious Easterly wind raised its head after lunch but Shaik played smart golf down the home straight to shake off trouble, as well as the no-two-ways-about-it medically diagnosed terminal condition that saw him secure an early release from prison.
